BABYLON ARTS GALLERY
The Babylon Gallery, then known as Babylon Arts, in Ely, Cambridgeshire, first opened in 1995. Babylon Arts was an independent arts development charity run by Arts Development in East Cambridgeshire (ADEC) and Babylon Gallery was on the picturesque riverside in Ely. They had a reputation for delivering a high-quality, wide-ranging programme of visual art, film, live events, and significant education and community-based projects in Ely and beyond and the Gallery was the City’s second most visited attraction second only to Ely Cathedral, welcoming over 25,000 visitors a year. in 2015 The Babylon Gallery on Ely’s Waterside had a new look and a new name Babylon Arts, and with Arts Council funding they programmed live events and art screenings in the gallery alongside their continually changing programme of exhibitions. In September 2024, the trustees of Babylon Arts informed key stakeholders of the organisation's ongoing financial challenges, since when, numerous efforts have been made to secure sustainable funding through negotiations with local authorities and other organisations. Despite clear communication that core funding was urgently needed by the end of February 2025, these efforts did not result in the necessary support, leaving the trustees with no choice but to close the gallery and cease all of the charity's operations. Suffolk artists who have exhibited at the Babylon Gallery include Leigh Driver; Juli Fejer; Donna Goymer; Tony Hatt; Sara Muzira; Helen Murray; Danila Pampanini; Sula Rubens; Zoë Rubens; Catherine Smith; Emilia Symis and Bryan Whiteley.
