Helen Murray

As Helen Elizabeth Cockburn, she was born in May 1960. Helen was educated at Farnham, Surrey 1971–1978 and then at West Surrey College of Art & Design. As Helen Murray, a freelance in art and an illustrator for various publishing houses and galleries 1990-2012 and since 2006, also a teacher. Helen spent several years working on paintings which explored the abstract qualities of colour, she now works with found objects, wood, stone, string, paper, and metal built up in layers over a painted surface and then reworked with combinations of paint, pencil, pen and ink with her gouache and collage works on paper being more illustrative. She lives at Chediston, Halesworth, Suffolk where she has spent more time working with learning-disabled adults and teenagers, providing art workshops on a regular basis. In March 2013, she opened the House on the Hill Gallery, adjacent to her studio, where on show are works by a variety of artists, including those with learning disabilities, with the support of Artbox, a not-for-profit group set up to support these activities. She has exhibited at Artbox Christmas Tree at St Mary's Church in Halesworth and at The Cut Halesworth as part of Halesworth Arts Festival and at Babylon Gallery, Ely also exhibited at the Eyestorm Gallery in Ipswich. Helen has donated a work to the 'Westhall Secret Postcard Auction' in 2013 'Gloop' and to the 'Laxfield Secret Postcard Auction' in 2014.
