RUBENS, Sula
Sula Frances Rubens was born at Westminster, London in 1967, daughter of Maurice Rubens and his wife, Ursula Ströh-Rubens, who married at Chelsea in 1961, she is the elder sister of Zoë Rubens. Around the time of her birth, the family moved to Ipswich, living at 27 Paget Road from where she completed a foundation course in art and design at Ipswich School of Art 1985-1986, obtaining an honours degree in fine art (painting) at St Martin's School of Art 1986-1989 and in 1993 gained a certificate from the International Teacher Training Institute to teach English as a foreign language to adults. Having travelled extensively, Sula is fluent not only in English but in German, French and Dutch. A member of the Ipswich Art Society from 18 Anglesea Road, Ipswich exhibiting in the under 25's group in 1990, two paintings 'Sun-Fish' and 'Frame-Fish' and in 1997 exhibited 'Whitewash'. Artist in residence at Westerkert, Amsterdam 1994-1995 and from 1996 taught at Suffolk College, Ipswich and at the Flatford Mill Centre, near Dedham, Essex. Her awards included Winsor & Newton Royal Institute of Oil Painters Young Artist Award 1989; Anna Airy Memorial Award for Painting 1989-1990-1991; New English Art Club Marks and Spencer Young Artist Award 3rd prize 1991. In 2019 Sula was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Watercolour Society. Sula, who is a member of the Suffolk Group of Artists, has exhibited at Primavera Gallery, Cambridge; Babylon Gallery, Ely; Mandell’s Gallery, Norwich and Halesworth Gallery, Suffolk and has had solo shows at North House Gallery, Manningtree, Essex; School House Gallery Wighton, Norfolk and Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge and elsewhere. She married in the Waveney district of Suffolk in 2003, Jacob P. Fuller and lived at Reydon, near Ipswich.
