SUFFOLK GROUP of ARTISTS

1989 - ?

Maurice Alfred Kelly, on retiring from his art school job in Warwickshire in 1983 and moving to Walberswick in Suffolk, discovered five of his former fellow students as well as a growing network of other artists and thought of forming a group of professional artists. Following discussions with like-minded artists, the Suffolk Group was formed in 1989, with around thirty professional painters, printmakers, and sculptors of local and national repute, living and working in Suffolk. Artists originally involved include Charles Bartlett, Richard Bawden, Bernard Cheese, Olwen Jones, Maurice Kelly, Claire Lambert, Richard Scott, Ian Simpson, Valerie Thornton, Joan Ward and her husband Bill Ward. Many more have since exhibited and or have joined this thriving Group. The First Annual Exhibition at Buckenham Galleries, Southwold, was opened by Ronald Blythe (6 November 1922–14 January 2023) in 1991 and held an annual exhibition at the Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh, as well as a further annual exhibition and occasional themed or special exhibition at other galleries in the region. The 29th Annual Exhibition was held in 2019 with invited artist Jennifer Hall and was a small works exhibition by fifteen members at Artspace Gallery, Woodbridge. There are over seventy-five Suffolk artists who are or have been members and have exhibited with the Suffolk Group of Artists.
