BARTLETT, Charles

1921 - 2014

Harold Charles Bartlett was born at Grimsby, Lincolnshire on 23 September 1921, only son of Charles Henry Bartlett and his wife Frances Kate née Robinson (1889-24 December 1978), who married at Grimsby in 1919. Using his second name, young Charles spent his childhood at Eastbourne, Sussex and was educated at Eastbourne Grammar School and studied at Eastbourne School of Arts and Crafts 1937-1940 and was as an outstanding student. Following his time in the Guards Armoured Division during the Second World War, he gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Art where he trained as a painter and etcher. He married firstly in West Cheshire in 1947, Elizabeth Robertson, elder daughter of Ian Robertson. Charles was a full-time Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Harrow School of Art 1960–1970 being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1961 and a Fellow of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1970 and was president 1987-1992. A founder member of the Suffolk Group and had a lifelong interest in the sea and coast which motivated his work, and he loved the landscape of East Anglia where he lived and worked, the brackish meres, shingle banks and great skies were his inspiration. He walked the salting's and beaches with a sketch book, making notes and studies as a base for paintings which he would later work on in his studio. He would work on several paintings at once, putting much thought and time into planning, then started to paint quickly, using lots of water and aiming to keep his work fresh. Charles had twelve solo shows from 2000, including in October 2011 to celebrate his 90th birthday and he exhibited at the Royal Academy. He married secondly at Ealing in 1971, Olwen Jones and they had one son and in 2012 lived at St Andrew's House, Fingringhoe, Colchester, Essex. Harold Charles Bartlett died on 19 December 2014.
