Richard Bawden

Richard Bawden was born at Braintree, Essex on 18 March 1936, son of artist, Edward Bawden, and his wife Charlotte née Epton (19 March 1902-15 May 1970), who married at Kensington, London in 1932. Richard was educated at Bryanston and studied painting, printmaking and graphic design at Chelsea School of Art, St Martin's School of Art, and the Royal College of Art. A painter, printmaker and designer working in lino, etching and watercolour and his work has included book illustration, murals for restaurants, etched glass church windows and doors, a poster for London Transport, mosaics and furniture and has taught drawing and printmaking at several London and provincial art schools. His paintings are drawn from life and often depict scenes of domesticity, such as his house, sofas, chairs, windows, cats, his garden, and its birds. He has had over fifty one-man exhibitions at home and abroad including a major retrospective at Gainsborough's House Gallery, Sudbury, Suffolk and has exhibited with Bircham Gallery since its opening in 1988 and a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1965. He married at Sudbury, Suffolk in 1987, Harriet C. Brown and they have one son and one daughter, and they live at 72 Benton Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk. Richard is a Council member of the Royal Watercolour Society, an elected member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, a member of the New English Art Club, and a former Chairman of the Gainsborough's House in Sudbury and a founder member of the Suffolk Group of Artists. He has work in Victoria & Albert Museum, The Tate Gallery, The Queen's Collection at Windsor Royal, Ashmolean and the Government Art Collection. Richard Bawden died on 31 May 2024.
