Asylum Studios was co-founded by Phil Robbins and set up in 1999 which, in 2000, was a co-operative to provide affordable studio spaces to locally based professional artists and to create a sustainable focus for arts activity in the area. Asylum Studios as an organisation, exists to provide artists with room to explore and to take risks in their working practice and hold regular events, exhibitions, seminars, residencies with classes open to the public. In 2004 they moved into the old 'Special Investigations' building on Bentwaters where there are viable artists’ studios with low rents, an on-site darkroom and general workshop facilities. The co-operative is artist centred and inclusive of non-members, a flexi-space can be available for short term rent, seminars will include artists from outside the membership as both audience and exhibitors. While membership is open, artists are selected on quality of work and commitment to the shared aims of the co-operative and already have a group of artists making a wide range of work with a substantial interest both from the press and the local community. Suffolk artists who are members and work from or have exhibited at Asylum Studios include Max Clements, Stevie Dix, Amy Marie Gladding, Ania Hobson, Thom Hobson, Nicki Holt, Anna Ilsley, Emma Jane Johnson, Marianne Koby Johnson, Steve Joyce, Justine Moss, Lizzie Musson, Rob Ramsden, Gerry Spiller, Pam Winbolt, Emma Withers, Angela Dawn Wright and Joel Wyllie.
