HOLT, Nicki
Nicola J. L. Holt was born in London in 1952, daughter of Stanley J. Holt and his wife Gerda Steiner, who married at Hampstead, London in 1944. Nicki studied at Harrow School of Art 1971-1972, Fine Art at Bath Academy of Art and at Harrow School of Art 1973-1976 where she studied Illustration. For some seventeen years Nicki worked as a freelance illustrator and designer, originally for books and magazines before turning to packaging design and illustration. Her focus has been etching and she has exhibited her work in London including at Centaur Gallery, 82 Highgate High Street, London; Camden Arts Centre; Chalk Farm Gallery, 176 Prince of Wales Road and Perrins Art Gallery, 16 Perrins Court, both at Hampstead. In 1989 she moved to Suffolk and, rediscovering printmaking now shows in Suffolk including at the Taplin Gallery, Woodbridge; Aldeburgh Gallery; Asylum Studios, Rendlesham; Wingfield Barns; The Cut Halesworth; Snape Maltings Galleries; Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh and at Nunnsyard Gallery, St Augustine Street, Norwich and elsewhere. Her subject matter varies but is inspired by plants, poetry, twilight, shadows, reflections, odd buildings, and the Suffolk landscape, layering her work with many textures which she tries to convey in her prints and printmaking. With etchings she uses intense precise drawing in a representational way, whereas collagraphs are a good foil for the elaborate and lengthy etching process which tend to produce more spontaneous, abstract, colourful prints. Nicki produces small runs of etchings, usually about twelve prints also producing monoprints, relief prints, dry point, and collage and occasionally combine some of these processes to create the desired result. A Member of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited in 2006, a monoprint 'Aquarium' and an etching 'Cabbage White Butterfly'.
