Jane Lewis

Jane Lewis was born at Bedford on 3 October 1951, daughter of Sylvanus Robert Lewis (3 April 1911-1994), a technician in an aero works, and his wife Marjorie Elizabeth Apter (11 October 1914-20 January 2004), then a junior commander in the ATS and third daughter of Leonard Vere Apter of Heathfield, North Petherton, who married at North Petherton Parish Church, Bridgwater, Somerset on 15 September 1945. Jane Lewis studied at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth 1970–1973, obtaining a B.A. (hons.) degree in Fine Art and English after which she taught Fine Art at Sheredes Secondary School in Hertfordshire 1975–1977 followed by a career in publishing in London 1977–1987. In 1987 she moved to Suffolk, continuing to work in publishing, and started painting becoming a professional artist in 1997, working from her own studios at 12-14 Swan Street, Boxford, Suffolk. Painting in oil, occasionally in watercolour, and draws with graphite, pencil, chalk, or pastels, also recycling paper to make collages. Her work is abstract, and she attends sessions of life drawing where her work is figurative, focusing on the models and their surroundings. Jane was awarded a Fellowship in Drawing by the Henry Moore Foundation, attracting the attention of Portal Gallery in London, where she has exhibited since 1993. She exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. In 2016 an Associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society and a full member in 2018 and has also exhibited regularly at New English Art Club at the Mall Galleries, London and is a member of the Colchester Art Society she has also shown at the Braintree Open, Essex; Wall Gallery, Ely, Cambridgeshire; Wykeham Gallery, Stockbridge, Hampshire; Fry Gallery, Saffron Walden, Essex; Rowley Gallery, London; Bankside Gallery, London and in Suffolk at D’Arcy Gallery, Ipswich; Gaston Gallery, East Bergholt; Halesworth Gallery; Dove Barn; John Stevens Fine Art, Hadleigh; Suffolk Showcase, Bury St Edmund's; The Cut Halesworth; Folkes Miller Fine Arts, Long Melford; Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh also at Norwich Castle Museums and Art Galleries. Her paintings and prints are in several public collections and numerous private collections. Her work has also featured on book covers, art catalogues and magazines.
