Malcolm Alan Cudmore was born at Lowestoft, Suffolk in September 1951, son of Charles A. W. Cudmore (born 29 October 1925) and his wife Joan E. Saunders, who married at Lowestoft in 1947. In the mid 1970s Malcolm studied performing arts at Dartington Hall Trust near Totnes in Devon and then qualified as a teacher. Following a varied career path, which included musician, community artist, actor, arts administrator and consultant, sign-maker and, finally, professional magician, in the late 1990s he returned seriously to his childhood passion in art. Malcolm commenced with adult evening classes followed by a part-time Foundation Course at Stafford College where he completed a two-year Fine Art HND (Distinction) and was the college’s resident Fine Art practitioner and later a sessional tutor. A figurative artist aiming to work from direct observation, painting in oils, pastels, charcoal, and coloured pencils. In 2007, after 25 years of living in Stafford, the family moved to a tiny hamlet close to Lytham on the Fylde coast when his wife returned to university in Preston to study ceramics, and where Malcolm worked from a studio at The Watermark in Preston. In 2010, they relocated to the outskirts of Bungay in Suffolk living in a small cottage in the Waveney valley where they established a pottery and painting studio at 2 Anchor Cottages, Wainford Road, Bungay, Suffolk. He is Chair of the Harleston and Waveney Art Trail, a committee member of Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle and regular exhibitor with the Inspired by Becker Art Society, Black Dog Arts Group and several East Anglian and UK “plein air” painting groups. He is a Silver Signature member of the UK Colour Pencil Society and a member of Easterly Artists. Malcolm has exhibited at Stafford; Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire; Stoke and at Derby Open Exhibitions; Lytham Heritage Centre; Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston; UKCPS Open International Exhibition; RBSA, Birmingham; International Exhibition, Westminster and locally at the Ferini Art Gallery, Pakefield; Cork Brick Gallery, Bungay; Lowestoft Arts Centre; Halesworth Open Exhibition and elsewhere. Malcolm married at Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire in 1977, Lorry Cudmore and they exhibited jointly at Art on the Prom at Felixstowe.
