BACK, Ken

1944 - 2002

Kenneth William Back was born at Guildford, Surrey on 2 April 1944, son of Lawrence Back (28 September 1901-16 November 1969), a railway clerk, and his wife Winifred Alice née Simpson (22 December 1899-7 June 1949), who married at Dover, Kent in 1933 and in 1939 were living at 27 Monins Road, Dover. Ken, as he was known, was educated at Astor School, Dover and studied at Canterbury College of Art 1959-1964, and at the Royal Academy Schools 1964-1967. An artist in oil and ink, and a teacher at Suffolk College 1971-1995 and a founder member of the Suffolk Group of Artists which included an exhibition 'Walberswick Post-War to Present' at Chappel Galleries, Essex in 1998. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and at Piccadilly Gallery; Park Walk Gallery, London and Discerning Eye 1990-1992 and elsewhere. He married at Walberswick, Suffolk in 1970, Corinne Roberts-Jones (15 February 1944-18 January 1996) and they had a son and a daughter. Kenneth William Back latterly lived at White Cottage, 135 Semere Green Lane, Dickleburgh, Diss on the Suffolk/Norfolk border and died on 25 July 2002 and two years later the Graham & Oldham Gallery in Ipswich mounted 'The Ken Black Legacy' featuring some of the works of his students. His paintings are represented in Nuffield Collection and St John's College, Oxford and elsewhere.
