DISCERNING EYE

1990 - ?

The Discerning Eye is a visual art focused educational charity, established in the UK in 1990 aiming to encourage a wider understanding and appreciation of the visual arts, to stimulate debate about the place and purpose of art in our society, and the contribution each one of us can make to its development. The ING Discerning Eye annual exhibition has been generously supported by exhibition sponsor ING since 1999 and is a show of small, domestic scale, works independently selected by six prominent figures from different areas of the art world: two artists, two collectors and two critics. The selectors choose both from the publicly submitted works and works by personally invited artists. Each selector's choice is theirs own alone and is hung in separate sections to give each its own distinctive identity with the impression emerges of six small exhibitions within the whole and it provides a opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside contributions from internationally recognised names. The only restrictions are that the pieces must be for sale, the artists UK based, the size of the work (50cm in any dimension) and that the selectors choose at least 25% of their section from the open submission. The ING Discerning Eye 2023 exhibition was at the Mall Galleries from 17 to 26 November 2023. Suffolk artists who exhibited with Discerning Eye include Ken Back, Derek Chambers, Roy Connelly, Jill Hodgson, Mona Jupp, Andrew Lambirth, Sue Read, Delia Tournay-Godfrey and Peter Wylie.
