READ, Sue

As Susan Melia, she was born at 24 St Elmo Crescent, Slough, Buckinghamshire in 1941, daughter of John Melia (4 December 1909-6 June 1982), a police constable, and his wife Enid Mary née Stacey (12 November 1916-11 October 2011), who married at Slough in 1937 and in 1939 were living at 87 Broadmark Road, Slough. Sue was educated at Aylesbury Grammar School and studied at High Wycombe School of Art 1959-1963 and the Royal West of England College of Art 1963-1964. She married at Aylesbury in 1965, Robert J. Read, they had three sons, and she now paints under the name of Sue Read. Sue, who has painted professionally since 1980, is an artist in watercolour, her still life paintings are usually quite small using pure watercolours, building up colours and tones in transparent layers and working in natural light. Sue has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition; Royal Watercolour Society; New English Art Club; Mall Galleries, London; The Discerning Eye; Thompson's Gallery, Aldeburgh, Suffolk and is a member and exhibitor at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. She has her studio at 26 Rectory Street, Halesworth, Suffolk.
