Margaret Glass

Margaret Rose Glass was born at Chesham, Buckinghamshire on 13 April 1950, daughter of Revd Kenneth William Glass (1923-2011), rector of Glemsford, Suffolk, and his wife Iris née Kerridge, who married in Gipping district of Suffolk in 1944. Margaret is a landscape and marine artist and a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1972 and in their centenary exhibition in 1974, exhibited a pastel 'River Orwell, Ipswich' also exhibiting from 331 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich in 1977 'Towards Ipswich', 'Nacton Shore' and a sculpture 'Hannah' Margaret is also a member of the Institute of East Anglian Artists. In 1980 elected a member of the Pastel Society and in 1984 a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London and two years later a member of La Société des Pastellistes de France of which she is a past Vice-President and in 1992 awarded the title 'Maitre Pastellist' by La Société, only the eleventh artist to receive this distinction. One of the leading Pastelists of today and in recent years has also built up a growing reputation as a talented oil painter, able to capture the light with the same facility as in her pastels. In 1989 she first exhibited at Galerie d'Art, Paris being invited to teach in Paris for the Pastel Society. Her work has been accepted at the Royal Academy; Royal Society of Marine Artists; Pastel Society and the Society of Women Artists and had her first solo exhibition in Biarritz, France followed by a solo exhibition at Mall Galleries, London also exhibiting at the Paris Salon; Buffalo and New York, Sarah Samuels, Chester and in East Anglia at the Hunter Gallery in Bury St Edmund's; Thompson's Gallery, Aldeburgh both in Suffolk and Geedon Gallery, Fingeringhoe and Church Street Gallery, Saffron Walden, both in Essex. She married in Suffolk in 2004, Brian F. Smith and in 2012 was living at Hill Cottage, Needham Road, Barking just outside Ipswich.
