BEALE, Alex
Alexander William Beale was born at Rustington-on-Sea, West Sussex in 1941, son of Edwin Beale and his wife Jessica née Bruce, who married at Fulham, London in 1932. In 1954 the family moved to East Anglia and Alex began studying painting and drawing part-time at Southend School of Art. He later worked in London as a printer for the Engineering Department of The General Post Office, before enrolling at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts. He married at Bexley, Kent in 1965, Kathryn L. Nash and they moved to Ipswich and where in 1967, he enrolled as a full-time student at Ipswich School of Art with three-dimensional work as his main area of interest. Alex then accepted a position at the Ipswich School of Art as Senior Technician in the Ceramics and Sculpture Department, working with Bernard Reynolds, Freda Sage and John Chipperfield. Beale was encouraged to exhibit and in 1976 set up Six in Suffolk Group with fellow artists Colin Moss, David Hazelwood, Gwynneth Reynolds, Mary Warsop and Judith Foster, which resulted in a series of successful exhibitions. Today he interprets his ideas, collected over many years, working in bas-relief using mixed media but he retired due to ill-health in 1994 but continued to paint and draw. As Alex Beale his exhibitions include in Suffolk, Ipswich Art Gallery; Ipswich Town Hall Gallery and regularly at the Wolsey Art Gallery, Christchurch Mansion, all in Ipswich and at Halesworth Gallery; Woodgates Gallery, East Bergholt and in Essex at Wivenhoe Arts Club and Chappel Galleries and many other East Anglian venues. A member of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from 6 Leicester Close, Ipswich in 1998, two mixed media pictures 'Pin Mill Wall' and 'Sea Wall, Sheringham' and in 2006 a further two mixed media paintings 'Walberswick' and 'Felixstowe'.
