CHIPPERFIELD, John

1943 - ?

Edward John Chipperfield, known as John, was born Stowmarket, Suffolk in 1943, only child of Horace Edward Chipperfield (17 July 1906-11 July 1984), a bank cashier, and his wife Fanny Jane Watson, née Williamson (28 October 1911-24 October 1997) who married at Tending, Essex in 1935 and in 1939 were living at 27 Chilton Avenue, Stowmarket. John was educated at a boarding school and was a student at the Ipswich School of Art 1961-1964 working with Bernard Reynolds in pottery and sculpture. He was also a painter in watercolour and progressed to St Martin's School of Art in London, before returning to Ipswich teaching in ceramics at the Ipswich School of Art. He was also an associate lecturer in Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martin's College of Art & Design in London and a founder member of the Suffolk Craft Society. A versatile ceramist he uses a wide range of forming processes to produce vessels including strongly asymmetrical jug forms and shallow dishes, all of which are vehicles for dramatic surface designs using coloured glazes. John Chipperfield married in the Depwade district of Norfolk in 1975, Penelope J. Thomas and they lived at The Pottery, Brockdish, near Diss on the Suffolk/Norfolk border.
