David Hazelwood

David Reginald Hazelwood was born at Ipswich on 20 February 1932, son of Wasley Gordon Hazelwood (18 December 1906-1993), a compositor, and his wife Christina Louise née Farrow (23 December 1907-1984), who married at Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1931 and in 1939, were living at 75 Rands Way, Ipswich, David was an elder brother to Gordon Hazelwood. A photo-lithographic artist 1948-1985 and then, as a self-taught artist, became a professional artist and collagist of abstract works in mixed media, acrylic, collage in a range of materials, including wood, cloth, hessian, music sheets and natural dyes. For a time, a member of Free Painters and Sculptors and was a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1965 and exhibited from 71 Ashdown Way, Ipswich in 1965 oil paintings, 'Paintings April '65' and 'Avocation No.3. 1965', in 1966 'The Rocks' and 'The Village', in 1967 from 83 Arundel Way, Ipswich, 'Figure in a Landscape' and 'Evocation, Wintersea', in 1968 oil collage 'Full Moon and Ochre Dunes' and 'Bouquet in Ochre and Blue', in 1971 an oil and collage 'At Twilight' and 'Elegy' and oil 'Ochre and Brown Painting'. His mixed media work 'Towards Melancholy' was exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club centenary exhibition in 1974 and he also exhibited from 83 Arundel Way, Ipswich in 1977 'Mirage' and a painting in the following year. A founder member of [[8+1 Suffolk Group,4380]] and Six in Suffolk Group he also exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition also showing at Bath Festival from 1983; International Art Fairs from 1985 including in Basle, Chicago, Cologne, and Frankfurt and held one man shows at the Medici Gallery and Loggia Gallery in London, Bedford College and in 1993 Galerie Peerlings, Krefeld, Germany and Galerie Krakeslatt, Bromölla, Sweden also holding one-man exhibitions at Reades Gallery and at Ipswich and Colchester and elsewhere in East Anglia. His work is represented in the Victoria & Albert Museum and many other institutions. In 1995 a tribute show was held at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich and Chappel Galleries, Essex held a solo exhibition of his collages in 2005. He married at Ipswich in 1954, Pauline Helen Elisabeth Woodward. David Reginald Hazelwood died at 83 Arundel Way, Ipswich on 11 February 1994.
