John Crossley

John C. Crossley, was born Dagenham Essex in 1952, son of Charles Crossley and his wife Susan née Truman, who married at Poplar, London in 1939. John studied at East Ham College of Technology 1969-1970 and sculpture at St Martin's School of Art in London 1970-1973, gaining a BA (hons.) followed by a post graduate course 1973-1974. Assistant to sculptor Sir Anthony Caro (1924-2013) at St Martin's School of Art 1974-1976 and won both a Sainsbury and Arts Council Award in 1974 and 1976. He had residencies at Rochdale Art Gallery, Sunderland and Triangle Workshop, Pine Plains, New York State in 1985, Aldeburgh Beach Lookout in connection with Caroline Wiseman Modern and Contemporary, Suffolk and at Casa Zia Lina, Elba, Italy 2015. John has taught widely, including at Chelsea College of Art and Design, where he was senior lecturer and also managed Camden Arts Centre 1975-1985. His paintings evolve through a state of addition and subtraction, creating a layered surface and structure beneath. John has exhibited throughout the UK and Italy, Greece, France, Singapore, Sweden and the United States, his solo/two man exhibitions include Camden Arts Centre; Wakefield Arts Centre, West Yorkshire; The Minories, Colchester; Rochdale Art Gallery, Lancashire; Oriel Gallery, Mold; Im Schlossli Grachwil, Berne, Switzerland; Harriet Green Gallery, the Milton Gallery and Bicha Gallery London; Chelsea College of Art and Design and Open studio in London, and is represented in London by Eames Gallery. An Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society and a Member of The London Group and after residing at Greenwich, London, he now lives at Wangford in Suffolk. His paintings are held at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Picasso Museum, Paris, Royal Watercolour Society and many others, with private collections in Belguim, France, Ireland, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the USA.
