HIGTON, Stephen
Stephen William Higton was born in Nottingham in 1950, son of Eric William Higton (7 November 1913-1989) and his wife Amy Eleanor née Cooper (9 November 1911-), who married at Nottingham in 1933 and in 1939 were living at 95 Gedling Road, Arnold, Nottinghamshire. Stephen has been painting whilst pursuing a career within the paper industry but a move to Utah, USA in 2005 brought the opportunity to concentrate solely on his art and, with encouragement of fellow artists and success in selling paintings in local exhibitions, Steve turned professional. Returning to England in 2008, he established himself as a professional artist in the countryside of East Anglia, where the coast, landscape and the rich artistic tradition of the county were the magnet that drew him to live and paint, with the sea and the big skies inspiring many of his works. A member and exhibitor at the Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle, the Institute of East Anglian Artists and the Suffolk Art Society, also holding workshops and demonstrations across the county for art groups including Southwold Art Circle, Woodbridge Art Club and Beccles Society of Artists and the Waterfront Gallery in Ipswich. A member of the Society for All Artists SAA, having won several awards including ‘Best Landscape’, ‘Best Professional Sea and Waterscape' and the Chairman’s Award in their ‘Artist of the year’ competitions in 2011 and 2012 and was also awarded ‘Best in show’ at Framlingham Art Society's show in 2011. Steve has also shown in Suffolk at Snape Maltings Galleries; Ferini Art Gallery, Pakefield; Buckenham Galleries, Southwold also at Aubrey Gallery, Great Dunmow; The Harbour Gallery, 8a The Quay, Portscatho, Truro and elsewhere. In 2011, two of his painting were purchased for The House of Lords Permanent Art Collection. He is married to the artist Mita Higton and their studio is at Castle Villa, Wilby Road, Stradbroke, Eye, Suffolk.
