BRISCOE, Arthur John Trevor
Arthur John Trevor Briscoe was born at Birkenhead on 25 February 1873, eldest child of John Briscoe (1842-15 March 1899), a cotton broker, and his wife Eliza Ann née Trevor (c1845-11 October 1930), who married at St John the Baptist Church, Chester on 23 April 1872. In 1881, Arthur was an 8-year-old, living at North Alton, Rose Mount, Oxton, Birkenhead with his parents, 38-year-old John and 36-year-old Eliza and his four siblings, Frederick Ernest Trevor 7, Alice Maud Trevor 5, Beatrice Mary Trevor 3 and newly born George Harold Trevor. Arthur was educated at Shrewsbury School but by 1891 the family had moved to Plas Newydd, Stone Row, Henllan Green, Denbighshire, where Arthur was an 18-year-old art student. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and at the Académie Julian in Paris. Arthur married at Ipswich early in 1901, Mabel Grace Sarah Shawyer (1881-21 October 1969) and in 1901, a 28-year-old artist living at Pin Mill, Chelmondiston, Ipswich with his 20-year-old wife Mabel, who was born at Ipswich. In 1911, a 38-year-old artist living at ‘Buzzon’ West Mersea, Colchester, Essex with his 29-year-old wife Mabel. A marine painter in oil and watercolour and an etcher being elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in 1930 and a member in 1933. In 1939, a marine artist, living at 'Twizzle', Mill Lane, Frinton-on-sea, Essex with married Alice Conyers Briscoe (23 September 1877-8 October 1942). He exhibited at Brook Street Art Gallery; Connell & Sons Gallery; Fine Art Society; Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Walker Art Gallery; New English Art Club; the Royal Academy; Royal Society of British Artists; Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers; Redfern Gallery and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, from London in 1895 and 1926, Maldon, Essex 1898, Orford, Suffolk 1901, Colchester 1920 and Walton-on-Naze 1938, both in Essex. He also authored and illustrated 'Handbook on Sailing' under the 'nom de plume' Clove Hitch (1904). Arthur John Trevor Briscoe was of Mill Lane, Frinton-on-sea, when he died at Broomfield Lodge Residential Hotel, Chelmsford on 27 April 1943, aged 70. He signed his paintings 'A.
