GOOCH, Nicola
Nicola Gooch studied portraiture and composition at the Slade School of Fine Art, the Royal Drawing School and at Raw Umber Studios in Stroud and was taught by painter, illustrator and muralist Rui Paes). Nicola, after an early career as a newspaper journalist, Nicola joined London Weekend Television, where she became Series Editor of the weekly current affairs series, The London Programme and Metro. Nicola left LWT to become part of the original Planet 24 team that devised The Big Breakfast for Channel 4 and was the show’s Deputy Editor. In 2011, with her business partner Charles Andrew Parsons (August 1958-), she set Alchemy TV specialising in food programmes such as How to Cook Like Heston and Spice Trip for Channel 4 and The Incredible Spice Men for BBC2. In 2017 she retired from television and moved to Suffolk to write, paint and run around with dogs. Nicola is fascinated by the rich palette and emotional rawness of early 20th century modernist and expressionist painters such as Edward Burra (29 March 1905–22 October 1976), Otto Dix (2 December 1891-25 July 1969) and Helene Schjerfbeck (10 July 1862-23 January 1946) and has received commissions for some fascinating subjects, including from her dog minder, an inspiring politician and the creative director of an Italian fashion house and revels in the freedom of expression afforded by painting and enjoys implying a narrative and humour in her work. Nicola now lives in Lavenham, Suffolk and is a trustee at Gainsborough's House and a member of the Somerton Set also exhibiting with the Heart of Suffolk Exhibition at Monks Eleigh and elsewhere.
