PAES, Rui
Rui Octavio De Sant Anna Manta Andrade Paes was born in Pemba, Mozambique in East Africa in July 1957. In 1981 he completed a degree in Painting at the Porto School of Fine Arts in Portugal and was awarded the Newcomers Prize at the Arús National Exhibition of Modern Art in 1982. In 1988, under a scholarship from The Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon and a grant from the Beal Foundation, Boston (USA), he completed his Master's degree in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London. A painter, illustrator and muralist and alongside his studio work Rui Paes has painted murals around the world, has illustrated eight books, including the children's book 'Lotsa de Casha' by Madonna. In 2008 Rui Paes was the creator, curator and co-organiser of the exhibition 'Looking at Picasso-Picasso and Portuguese Art of the 20th Century' at Portimao in Portugal which became the blueprint for the exhibition 'Picasso & Modern British Art' at Tate Britain and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, in 2012. At his studio in the Suffolk village of Somerton in 2013, he established the Somerton Set, a group of Suffolk and Essex artists who have met weekly at Rui Paes’s studio at The Old Rectory, Somerton, Bury St. Edmunds. He has exhibited widely including thirteen solo exhibitions and his work is represented in Japan, the Middle East, Europe and the United States.
