SOMERTON SET

2013 - ?

The Somerton Set was established in 2013 by artist and muralist Rui Paes at his studio in the Suffolk village of Somerton and is a group of Suffolk and Essex artists who have met weekly at Rui Paes’s studio. They work as a group but apart, led by Rui Paes who acts as a mentor rather than a teacher, encouraging the artists to develop their own voices. The group upholds the South Suffolk artistic tradition pioneered by Cedric Morris in the 1930s at his East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Hadleigh, Suffolk. They work using watercolours, acrylics and oils on diverse subjects and in their own individual styles. Their work has featured diverse subjects, including portraiture, natural landscapes, and unique, often quirky and they have exhibited at Lavenham Hall Gallery of Kate Denton. Members have included garden designer Janey Auchincloss and Gill Bailey, Louise Drayton, Sue Glasgow, Nicola Gooch, Julie Jolly, Anna Laflin, Jackie Lewis, Elisabeth Maguire, Anna Ponton, Sandy Pritchard-Gordon and Tina Rice.
