DALBY, Claire
As Joy Claire Allison Longbotham she was born at St Andrews, Scotland on 20 November 1944, daughter of Charles Norman Longbotham, and his wife Eleanor Friedel Nairn-Allison (c1910-1972), youngest daughter of Mrs. Eleanor Nametta Rittershaus, Charles and Eleanor married at St Andrew's Church, Bath on 9 March 1940. Joy studied at the Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls at Acton in West London 1955-1963 and at City and Guilds of London Art School 1964-1967, specialising in engraving and calligraphy and the techniques of wood engraving from Joan Hassall. In 1966 she was awarded a David Murray landscape studentship and spent time at the Flatford Mill Centre in Suffolk, where she met botanist Dunkery Hugh Dalby (1930-2013) whom she married at Ealing in 1967. In 1966 she had her first picture exhibited at the Royal Academy in London which was followed by regular exhibits under married name of Claire Dalby. Together with Jenny Jowett (1936-2019) they offered instructions in wood engraving to Alison Jones. Dalby exhibited at Clarges Gallery, 158 Walton Street, London in 1968 with solo exhibitions from 1975 in several group shows including those of the Society of Wood Engravers, the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Dalby provided botanical illustrations for several of books and created wallcharts, illustrating over 500 species of lichens for the Natural History Museum 'Lichens on Rocky Seashores', and in 1989 a collection of her botanical illustrations was published as Claire Dalby's Picture Book. Dalby was awarded the Linnean Society their Jill Smythies Award for outstanding botanical illustrations in 1994 and the following year she was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Horticultural Society.
