JONES, Alison

1962 - ?

Alison Margaret Jones is a self-taught artist, but she was introduced to watercolour and received tuition from Jenny Jowett (1936-2019) and Claire Dalby, both leading botanical artists. A festival of fuchsias held in the village church in 1984 provided Alison with the incentive to pick up a paintbrush, initially she worked in acrylic and gouache on a variety of different coloured backgrounds, which portrayed the vibrancy found in fuchsias but later the technique of using watercolours with a ‘dry’ brush was integrated with the other media to produce the full range of botanical subjects. Now a painter in watercolour, pastel and mixed media who was awarded the Grenfell Silver medals from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1990, 1993, 2000, 2008 and 2013 for exhibitions of fuchsias, cyclamen, alstroemerias and others, and in 1995 illustrated, with 40 line drawings and 12 colour plates, Edwin J. Goulding's ‘Fuchsias: The Complete Guide’ and in October 2000 became a full member of the Society of Floral Painters. She has exhibited at the Royal Horticultural Society also at the Edmund Gallery, Bury St Edmund's; Blackthorpe Barn, Rougham, Suffolk; Oxmarket Gallery, Chichester; Wymondham Art Society, Norfolk; The Vyne, Basingstoke, a National Trust property and at the Spring Show, Malvern, Worcestershire and has an annual exhibition at Artworks and since 2000 at the annual exhibitions for the Society of Floral Painters at Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire.
