Ann-Marie James

Ann-Marie Frances James was born in Buckinghamshire in 1981, daughter of Dominic and Sally James. Ann-Marie studied at St Martin's School of Art, London 2001–2004 for her B.A. (hons) Fine Art, at Chelsea College of Art & Design, London 2010 for a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art and at Wimbledon College of Art, London 2010–2012 for her M.A. Fine Art. James's works layer upon found images of paintings and photographs of sculptures from the 18th and 19th century, burying them in a mixture of oil and acrylic paints. Traces of the original image are sometimes visible through the accumulation of applied layers, in different techniques that include laser etching, pastiche of manga-style penmanship, and traditional painterly brushstrokes. Her awards include The Queen's Award, Central Saint Martin's Scholarship Awards 2003; The Jealous Graduate Print Prize, London 2012; MFI Flat Time House Graduate Award, supported by the John Latham Foundation, London 2012; The Derek Hill Foundation Scholarship at the British School at Rome 2013–2014 and the Artists International Development Fund travel award, Arts Council England 2016. She currently (2018) lives and works in Suffolk and her solo exhibitions include 'After Dürer', Fairhurst Gallery, Norwich, in collaboration with Karsten Schubert. Her works are in the collections of The British Museum, London; The British School at Rome, Rome; Chelsea College of Art & Design Library, University of the Arts, London and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
