Silke Schelenz

Silke Schelenz was born in Berlin in January 1966 and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Free University of Berlin, Germany in 1992 where she also studied for her MD in the department of Paediatric Pulmonology and Immunology. In 1997 she obtained her PhD at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine studying the subject of host response to Aspergillosis and Cryptococcosis. Since then, she specialised in the field of Medical Microbiology and is a consultant microbiologist at Kings College Hospital in London the laboratory director and clinical lead for Infection Sciences. She is now a London and Suffolk based artist. Most of her artwork is based on photographs that she takes during her travels depicting urban spaces, atmospheric landscapes, silhouettes of people or objects. Dr Silke is a member of Suffolk Open Studios and works mostly in her Suffolk studio at 28 High Street, Saxmundham or the Putney School of Art with some works also created at Artichokes Print Workshop in South London and at Sudbourne Park Printmakers. Most of her printmaking skills are self-taught being refined over the years in workshops with Jason Hicklin (born 1966), Norman Ackroyd (born 1938) and visits to the international print-studios Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice and Il Bisonte in Florence. Her work has been exhibited at international events such as the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions; Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in London; Mall Galleries, London; Print Biennale in Bulgaria and local galleries at Snape Maltings Galleries, Aldeburgh Gallery, Earsham Hall Art Gallery, Fisher Theatre Gallery, Bungay and elsewhere. Her works are held in several private collections.
