PUTNEY SCHOOL OF ART
Putney School of Art was founded in 1883 on Putney High Street and since 1895 has been in Oxford Road, Putney. The main benefactors of the original Victorian school were Sir William Lancaster (1841–1929), Baron Charles Edward Pollock (1823-1897) and Sir Arthur Selborne Jelf (1876–1947). The first masters included John William Allison (1865-1934) and James (John) Bowyer (1872-1941). Ten years after opening the intake was such that the existing student accommodation was too small when a purpose-built school was constructed and in 1906 was taken into the auspices of the London County Council. Now named Putney School of Art and Design, it has six studios designed specifically for painting, printmaking, drawing, ceramics and more recently, digital design. Suffolk artists who taught at Putney School of Art include Robin Hazlewood, Eric Larmont and Silke Schelenz and students include Carolyn Clark,
