BALDWIN, Frederick William
Frederick William Baldwin was born at South Lowestoft, Suffolk on 17 March 1899, eldest of the two sons of William Baldwin, a bricklayer [builder], and his wife Clara née Hubbard, who married at Lowestoft in 1898. Frederick was educated at Sir John Leman School in Beccles and was a draughtsman with Brooke Marine Ltd., at Lowestoft. A mostly self-taught pencil, pen, and watercolour artist, although he did have some instruction from George Clausen and was encouraged by members of the Sole Bay Group such as Martin Hardie (1875-1952) and Walter Francis Crittall. Fred met Leonard Squirrell at Lowestoft in 1923, and together, they went on many local sketching trips and, like Squirrell, produced artwork for LNER Post-War series for railway leaflets also for P & O menus, their friendship lasted until Squirrell's death in 1979. A member of Ipswich Art Club 1928-1962 and in 1932 exhibited from 'Thatched Cottage', Westhall, Holton, near Saxmundham, Suffolk four water-colours/pencil drawings 'Wherries', 'Cottage Bedrooms, Suffolk', 'Westhall Mill, Suffolk' and 'In the Bedchamber, Uggleshall', in 1933 a further six watercolours 'Country near Blythburgh', 'Eastertide, Suffolk', 'Excavations at Bungay Castle', 'Windmill, Westall', 'Bungay from Earsham Road' and 'Afterglow' and was a regular exhibitor including in 1937 five watercolours 'Rumburgh Priory', 'Coal Lighter in Lowestoft Harbour', 'Ely from Barton', 'Sea Havoc at Pakefield' and 'A Suffolk Water Run', in 1944 'Church Farm, Uggleshall, Suffolk', 'Suffolk Scene', 'Westhall, Suffolk', 'Carter's Mill, Wrentham', 'Barn Interior' and 'Wrentham, Suffolk' and he also exhibited with the Ipswich Watercolour Society. He also exhibited with the Sole Bay Group at Southwold also showing at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Society of British Artists and elsewhere. He later moved to Stoven, near Beccles, Suffolk and was a member of the Great Yarmouth & District Society of Artists 1957-1961. He had resigned from the Ipswich Art Club by 1962 when he seems to have given up his painting, but his pictures were exhibited in a retrospective show of his work at Beccles in 1980 with a further show the following year and their success encouraged Frederick to take up his brush again. William married in the Mutford district of Suffolk in 1928, Kathleen Margaret Cross (1899-1978). Frederick William Baldwin died at the Blythburgh & District Hospital, Halesworth, Suffolk on 10 October 1984, they had one son, John Hubbard Baldwin (1931-1988).
