BADMIN, Stanley Roy

1906 - 1989

As Stanley Roy Badman, he was born at 8a Niederwald Road, Sydenham, London on 18 April 1906, second of the three sons of Charles James Badman (26 April 1877-22 September 1951), an art teacher, and his second wife Maggie [Margaret] née Raine (7 May 1879-12 July 1950), who married at Barnstaple, Devon in 1903 and in 1939 were living at 40 Thorpewood Avenue, Lewisham. In 1911, Stanley was a 4-year-old, living at Lewisham with his parents, 33-year-old Charles and 31-year-old Maggie, with two sibling brothers, Alan Charles 6 and Eric 1, both born at Sydenham. Stanley was educated at Sydenham School, where he seems to have adopted the surname ‘Badmin’ and studied at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts and at the Royal College of Art, London and at the age of 26, was one of the youngest associate members of the Royal Watercolour Society and was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours. As S. R. Badmin, in 1933 he exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 15 Mill Street, London W.1. two etchings 'Burford' and 'Swinbrook Bridge' which he also exhibited at the Royal Academy. During the 1930s, Badmin received commissions for magazine illustration, producing his first book illustrations in 1937 in Clifford Bax's 'Highways and Byways of Essex' and was the author of three books for Puffin, including in 1943 'Trees in Britain'. During the Second World War, Badmin worked for the Ministry of Information before enlisting in the Royal Air Force and after demobilisation taught at several art schools in London, including at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in the 1950s. He married twice, firstly in 1925, Margaret Georgina Colbourn (5 October 1904-1 September 2000), they had a son and a daughter, divorcing in 1948, and secondly in 1950, widow Rosaline Elizabeth Wates Flew née Downey (4 January 1915-14 June 2011), and they had a daughter. As Stanley Roy Badmin, he was of 'Streamfield', Bignor, Pulborough when he died at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, West Sussex on 28 April 1989. A major retrospective exhibition of his work was held in 1985.
