Penny Bhadresa

As Penelope A. McAllister, she was born in Surrey in 1956, daughter of Donald Malcolm McAllister (8 November 1921-31 July 2015) and his wife Hazel Jean née Malyon (3 September 1928-18 October 2010), who married in 1955. In 1979, having graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in History, she then gained a postgraduate certificate in Museum Studies, before joining The Museum of London in 1980. Penny married at Colchester, Essex in 1987, Rasik Bhadresa, warden of Groton Wood and chairman of Brett Valley Group of Suffolk Wildlife Trust, and paints under the name of Penny Bhadresa. In 1993, she left her position as Press Officer at the Museum to study Art and Design at the University of East Anglia, graduating with a degree in Art and Design in 1995. An artist and printmaker who has been steadily building a reputation for her work in a variety of media, but linocut and mixed media collage predominate. Subject matter continues to be drawn from her responses to nature, landscape, and garden settings and incorporates these into her work. She has exhibited at galleries in East Anglia including annually with Norfolk Arts at Burnham Overy Staithe, Norfolk and at the Christmas Craft Markets at Blackthorpe Barn, Rougham, Suffolk. A former member of Artworks and in 2003 its chairperson and is also a member of the Suffolk Craft Society. In 2006 she exhibited at the Suffolk Art Society from Holly Cottage, East End Lane, East Bergholt, Suffolk, two lino prints 'Just Landed' and 'The Wild One' and has also shown at Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh; Summer and Christmas Exhibitions at Cambridge Contemporary Art; St Jude’s in the City, Bankside Gallery, London; Print Selection Exhibition, Craftco, Southwold and many other venues. In 2011 she was commissioned to illustrate Carol Klein’s monthly column in BBC 'Gardens Illustrated' magazine.
