ROSE, Donald Arthur

1925 - 2006

Donald Arthur Rose was born at 54 Essex Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk on 15 October 1925, the only son of a family four, of Arthur Rose (17 April 1896-1974), a fisherman, and his wife Daisy Margaret née Websdale (18 September 1900-1976), who married at Lowestoft in 1920 and in 1939 were still living at Essex Road, Lowestoft with Donald's sibling sister Doreen Sybil [Dennington] (31 May 1931-1996). Donald was educated at Roman Hill School, Lowestoft, leaving at the age of fourteen to a career as a bricklayer. Apart from a period in the army, he carried on in the building trade until the age of forty when he joined, an engineering company at Lowestoft where he remained until 1990. A self-taught artist and was always drawing and sketching as a child, but allowed his interest to lapse until he joined the Lowestoft Art Group in 1966, when he began to polish his artistic skills and attended Lowestoft College of Art to study life painting and drawing. Over the years he has given demonstrations to local clubs and organisations where his speed of painting quickly produced atmospheric and appealing pictures. On his retirement in 1990, he spent the summer months, in the company of Norman Harper, Derek Plant, Kevin Thompson, Douglas Hosea and Douglas Urquhart on weekly sketching outings around East Anglia. He painted in several different mediums, but oils were his favourite, giving him wide scope to express the atmosphere and subdued colour of rural scenes for which he has become renowned. A past President and Chairman of the Lowestoft Art Group and past President of Oulton Broad Art Circle. He exhibited his work regularly at the annual exhibitions of these two groups and at Beccles Society of Artists. Donald Arthur Rose died in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in 2006.
