1924 - 2001

Lawrence John Self was born at Sutton, Surrey on 27 January 1924, son of Herbert Chilvers Self (2 November 1895-30 July 1972) and his wife Jessie Gertrude Evans Taylor (29 April 1898-12 May 1966), second daughter of Richard Miller of Radway Place, Sidmouth, who married at All Saints' Church, Benhilton, Sutton in February 1923 and in 1939 were living at The Wayside, Lynton, Devon. After Brentwood School and three years' service in the forces 1944-1947, Lawrence attended Wimbledon School of Art 1947-1949, moving to the Royal College of Art 1949-1952, being awarded the Richard Jerwood prize for drawing and won the Laing competition. In 1957, he moved to Suffolk teaching at the Ipswich School of Art, during which time was an assistant to Colin Moss in the life drawing classes. A landscape painter but also produced portraits and still life and exhibited at the Royal College of Art; Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 1952; Royal Academy; King Street Gallery Cambridge 1963; Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon 1974; New English Art Club from 1988; Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich 1991 and Chappel Galleries, Essex 1992. Named by John Peel as his favourite painter, being included in the Peel 'Meltdown' exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in 1998 and the D'Arcy Gallery, Ipswich 2000. His solo shows began at the Haste Gallery, Ipswich in 1963 and later at Gainsborough's House Gallery, Sudbury and he also exhibited at Gallery Thirteen, Aldeburgh, Suffolk. He lived at Keeper's Mead, Lower Road, Rattlesden, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk and died at the West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmund's on 28 December 2001 leaving behind his wife, fellow artist Ashe Ericksson, and several children.
