Jutta Bastian

Jutta K. Bastian was born at Hidesheim, Germany in 1967. After completing her Abitur ('A' levels), in 1987 she moved to the UK and took a Foundation Course in Art & Design at Chelsea School of Art, London 1989-1990. She then studied at Bradford College of Art 1991-1994 gaining a B.A. (Hons), and a post-graduate diploma in Fine Art from Bradford Stanford University in 1995, before taking her City & Guilds Certificate in Adult Education from Hackney College, London in 1997, at the same time at Middlesex University, London 1996-1999 for her Master of Arts. Together with Joern Werner, Jutta Bastian-Werner then moved to 'Hidden Hut', The Green, Walberswick, Suffolk where her daughter, Jelena Marlene Werner, was born in 2000, her eldest child Janek Bruno Werner had been born at Haringey in 1997. Her works are small paintings, which examine fundamental modes of existence trying to show that children and babies have their own personalities by painting some character heads, and for many of her paintings, photographs of her son were used as a starting point. She has had several solo and group exhibitions including Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester 2000; Artists Flags, Sail 2000, Bremerhaven, Germany 2001; a solo at Halesworth Gallery, Suffolk 2001; Kettle's Yard, Cambridge and Wolsey Gallery at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich 2002. She is now a freelance artist back in Germany.
