WHITWORTH ART GALLERY
The Whitworth Art Gallery in Whitworth Park is part of Manchester Metropolitan University, operating as a convening space between the University and the people of the city. It was founded by Robert Dukinfield Darbishire (10 September 1826–8 November 1908) a Manchester lawyer and philanthropist, with a bequeath from Sir Joseph Whitworth (21 December 1803–22 January 1887) an engineer, entrepreneur, inventor, and philanthropist and was named 'The Whitworth Institute and Park'. The first building was completed in 1908. In 1958, the gallery became part of the Victoria University of Manchester. Suffolk artists who are represented in or exhibited at the Whitworth Gallery include Jutta Bastian, Karen Densham, Robert William Dodd, Tessa Newcomb and Reginald St Clair Marston and the Young Contemporaries also exhibited at The Whitworth Gallery.
