Christopher Penny

Christopher Neil Lewis Penny was born at Blandford Forum, Dorset on 24 February 1947, youngest son of Wilfred Lewis Penny (27 April 1911-13 July 1969), a men's outfitter, and his wife Betty May Davey (2 May 1918-11 August 1999), only daughter of Alfred Charles Davey, who married at Tower Street Methodist Church, Exmouth on 22 July 1939, when they lived at High Street, Bridgewater, Somerset. Christopher studied at Bournemouth College of Art and Design 1964-1968. A visiting lecturer at Bournemouth College of Art, Chelsea College of Art & Design and at Harrow College of Art 1968-1970 and a master printer at Studio Prints Atelier, London 1968-1975, head of printmaking at Byam-Shaw School of Art, London 1970-1979 when he moved to Suffolk. He married at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Acton on 4 July 1970, Trudi-Yvette Therese Van Giap (born 1953), second daughter of C. Van Giap. In 1982, a 'John Brinkley' Fellow at Norwich School of Art where he taught etching and taught at Ian Welsh's (1944-2014) private art school on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. A skilled etcher of precisely detailed landscapes, among the leading fine art publishers that have published his prints are Christie Contemporary Art; the Royal Academy; Grffit; the National Trust and American Express. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1984 from Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk and at their centenary exhibition in 1985, he showed an etching & aquatint 'Ferny Wood'. He participated in many solo and mixed shows in Europe, America, Japan, and Australia. His one-man exhibitions include Cambridge Contemporary Art in 1995 and was included in a 1998 group show there of 'Cambridge Views', where his meticulously observed depictions of King's College and the Bridge of Sighs were mixed with views of unexpected corners of the city. Penny's work is in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Norwich and Sheffield Universities, Pennsylvania Academy and Philadelphia Public Library. The sultans of Oman and Brunei, the Duchess of Kent, Ludovic Kennedy, Janet Suzman and Bill Wyman are among notable private buyers of his work. Christopher Neil Lewis Penny lived at Rose Cottage, Lower Green, Hawkeden, Bury St Edmund's where he died in 2001.
