Robert Roe

Robert Roe was born in Needham Market in Suffolk around 1793, son of Joseph Roe and his wife Jemima née Coe (1768-1842), who married at St Mary's Church, Barking, Suffolk on 7 December 1792, Robert was a brother to Owen Roe. Robert moved to Cambridge around 1818 and in 1821 he married at St Botolph's Church, Cambridge, Mary Elizabeth née Edleston (1800-March 1856) and they were living at 14 Kings Parade. Mary and Robert had at least five children: Robert Henry (1823-1905), Ellen (1825-), Owen (1827-1877), Emily (1829-1890) and Mary Matilda (1835-1907). He regularly travelled around Suffolk and in 1851 was staying at the Bell Inn at 1 Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds and became acquainted with Edward Fitzgerald. On the death of his wife Mary in 1856, he married for secondly at St Matthew's Church, Ipswich on 1 September 1859 his sister-in-law (Eliza) Maria Plees (18 May 1828-17 December 1901), daughter of Revd William George Plees, vicar of Ashbocking, Suffolk. He continued to live at 14 Kings Parade with his new wife and children, and in 1861 Robert was described on the census as an ‘engraver, print seller and carver, gilder and plate glaze factory employing two men and a boy’. He went on to have at least three more children with Maria: Robert Gordon Roe, Charles Edward Roe and Alfred Frederick (1864-1947). Several other sons became painters including Robert Henry Roe from his first marriage who was a fine Victorian landscape painter and even his grandchildren became artists, most notable Clarence Roe. Robert was an engraver, miniaturist and print maker and a founder member of the Printsellers’ Association, attending the inaugural meeting in London in 1847, and his work and publications appear in the National Portrait Gallery. Robert Roe died at 14 Kings Parade on 31 July 1880 in his 88th year (87) and buried in Mill Road Cemetery, Cambridge.
