ROE, Robert Gordon

1860 - 1927

Robert Gordon Roe was born at 14 King's Road, Cambridge on 5 July 1860, and baptised at St Edward Church, Cambridge on 20 September 1860, son of Robert Roe (c1793-31 July 1880), a print-seller, and his wife (Eliza) Maria Plees (18 May 1828-17 December 1901), daughter of Revd William George Plees, vicar of Ashbocking, Suffolk, who married at St Matthew's Church, Ipswich on 1 September 1859, after their marriage Robert with his wife returned to live at Cambridge, where he set himself up as a painter, picture conservator, frame maker, glass factor, gilder, engraver, publisher and printseller. Robert's younger brothers were Charles Edward Roe and Fred Roe. Robert was taught art by his father and studied at St Catherine's College, Cambridge and, on taking holy orders, married at Fulham, London on 24 May 1884, Isabel Alice Kysh (17 August 1860-11 January 1938), who was born in India, daughter of John Anthony Kysh. In 1891 a 30 year old clerk in holy orders, living at The Vicarage, Badwell Street, Badwell Ash, Suffolk with his 27 year old wife Isabel and children Muriel Alice Gordon Roe 5, who was born at Weaverham, Robert Gordon 3, who was born at Teddington and Maude Beatrice 2, who was born at Badwell Ash, with two visitors and three indoor servants. By 1901 they had moved to St Margaret's Vicarage, Nelson Street, King's Lynn and by 1921 had moved to The Rectory, Blakeney, Blakeney, Norfolk. The Reverend Canon Robert Gordon Roe of Acle Norfolk died at Acle on 19 May 1927 and buried in Acle churchyard on 23 May 1927. He left his effects to his widow and son Robert Gordon Roe, a manufacturer's agent.
