Chris Wood

Christopher Neville Wood was born at Ipswich in December 1952, son of Eustace Neville Wood (1916-2003), a Royal Naval Officer. Chris, as he is known studied at the Ipswich School of Art, followed by Wimbledon School of Art, now part of the University of the Arts London, where he won two prestigious awards for his work featured in the end of year exhibition. This was followed by a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) graduate course in education at Portsmouth University. Chris has worked in advertising, retail and publishing with one of his first creative positions was working as a visual artist in the Central London design studio, Typographic Services which was followed by freelancing as an illustrator, designing and producing paintings for book jackets also producing illustrations for many maritime books and regularly contributed to magazine 'Yachting World'. He has taught fine art for nearly 30 years including at the Omega Art School at Southsea and was an academic leader both in Further and Higher Education. He has a fine art practice, operating from Studio 3 at Artspace Portsmouth and is best known for his maritime painting, often following the 'pier head painter' tradition of ship portraiture and other subject matter includes human form, natural history and topographical subjects, which are cut from lino and or boxwood and printed on an Albion Press. Wood exhibits in the UK and is a regular contributor to solo and group exhibitions in London and the South and his native, East Coast including in 2026 at the Frame Workshop & Greenhouse Gallery in Ipswich where he is a member of the Ipswich Art Society and has work is held in numerous private collections in the USA, Canada, South Africa and across Europe.
