PORTSMOUTH SCHOOL OF ART

Portsmouth School of Art began its life in 1869 as the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and the Arts. By 1894 the Schools science and technology courses were under the control of the local authority as the Borough of Portsmouth Municipal Technical Institute and in 1908 was renamed the Municipal College, Portsmouth when the focus was on chemistry and engineering although art was also on the curriculum. In 1945, in response to a decline in the need for engineering skills, the college diversified its syllabus adding arts and humanities subjects and in 1960-1980 it opened the Frewen library and in 1969 gained Polytechnic status as Portsmouth Polytechnic. In July 1992 it became the University of Portsmouth and has a diverse range of courses that include Portsmouth School of Architecture and a School of Art and Design.
Alumni and staff include Richard John Mackness, John Elwyn (1916-1997), Meredith William Hawes, Ian Moss, Margaret Pullee (1910-2003), Norman Wilkinson (1878-1981) and Harold Wilfred Yates.
