HINTLESHAM HALL
Hintlesham Hall in Suffolk has a long history, with owners such as the Timperley's, the Lloyd family from 1747 until the beginning of the twentieth century and in 1909 Sir Gerald Hemmington Ryan, Bart. purchased the estate, he was the father of Vivian Desmond Ryan and grandfather of Adrian Ryan. In 1938 Antony Scott Stokes, purchased the Hall and in 1951 established the famous and popular Hintlesham Festival which ran for some twenty years until his death. This event quickly became an internationally renowned festival after being started to raise money for charities and took place in the grounds in July each year. There were also exhibitions of art in the upper Long Gallery and various floodlit sculptures adorned the grounds. Following the death of Tony Stokes, in 1971 Robert Carrier purchased the Hall with 11 acres and it became the famous restaurant and hotel. With its fascinating and diverse history, after some 600 years, the Hall thrives into the 21st Century as a notable landmark in Suffolk. Cobbold & Judd held art exhibitions at Hintlesham Hall in 2005 and Suffolk artists who exhibited at Hintlesham Hall include Wendy Brooke-Smith, Michael Crowe, Derek Jarman, Jen Raison, Arabella Shand and Christine Frances Stephenson.
