Vivian Desmond Ryan was born at Kensington, London on 7 September 1893, second son of Gerald Joseph Hemmington Ryan (25 January 1861-27 May 1937) later Sir Gerald, 1st Bart., an actuary, and his wife Ellen Amelia Ellis (1860-22 November 1935), only daughter of Augustus Thomas Ellis of Cambridge, who married at All Saints' Church, Cambridge on 23 July 1885. In 1907, his father purchased the Hintlesham Hall Estate, near Ipswich where young Vivian, who was deaf and dumb, was living in 1911, a 17-year art student, with his parents, 50-year-old Gerald and 50-year-old Ellen. He studied art at Cambridge under William Beales Redfern (1840-1923), who in 1911 was a visitor at Hintlesham Hall. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1919-1938 and exhibited from Migvie Lodge, 2 Porchester Gardens, London in 1923, four oil paintings 'Mrs Vivian Ryan', 'Flowers', 'A Cellar' and 'Ash Trees in the Home Wood, Hintlesham', in 1927 four oil paintings 'The Late W. B. Redfern, Esq.', 'Shirley Poppies', 'Interior' and 'Signor Carlo Tedeschi' and in 1932 now from Hintlesham Hall, Suffolk, four oils 'St Martin Vesubie', 'The Blue Bowl', 'Nicolai of Cagnes Epieier', 'Hydrangeas' and a watercolour 'A View near St Martin, Vesubie' and was a regular exhibitor from Hintlesham Hall. Elected an Associate of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1926 also exhibiting at Goupil Gallery; Walker Art Gallery; Royal Society of Portrait Painters; the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters 1915-1931 He married firstly at St John's Parish Church, Croydon on 20 September 1917, Kathleen Frances Helps (20 December 1891-15 November 1945), second daughter of James William Helps, and their second son was Adrian Ryan. Vivian married secondly on 11 April 1946, Nanny Slater (1 March 1907-20 July 1988). In 1939 he was living at 37 Platts Lane, Hampstead, London. Vivian Desmond Ryan died at 16 Avenue Mansions, Finchley Road, Hampstead, London on 25 February 1950, aged 56.
