THEATRE ROYAL NORWICH

? - ?

Opened for the first time in 1758, Norwich Theatre Royal, Theatre Street, Norwich has been a staple of the arts and culture of Norwich for centuries. The building was destroyed by fire in 1934 and was bombed during the Second World War after which audience numbers dwindled, and the theatre began showing films and boxing matches and later rock and roll shows. The theatre was threatened with closure and Norwich City Council gathered a rescue package and in 1970 Dick Condon became the manager to be followed by Peter Wilson 1992-2016. The theatre had a major refurbishment in 2007. The grand 1300 seat venue has played host to some of the biggest names and productions in touring theatre. Suffolk artists who have entered works at exhibitions held at the Theatre Royal Norwich include Tricia Davidson, Cornelia Fitzroy, Bill Haward, Martin Richard Laurance, Andy Powell, Mary Spicer and Brüer Tidman.
