Jack Cudworth

Jack Cudworth was born in Leeds in 1930, son of Horace Cudworth (11 February 1910-), a salesman, and his wife Ada née Fieldhouse (11 October 1905-), who married at Leeds South in 1929 and emigrated to Canada in 1959. Jack was educated at Leeds Central High School and, at the Leeds Youth Festival Exhibition held at City Art Gallery in 1944, his pencil drawings were commended in the under 16 from Sandford Youth Club and in 1947 his painting was used on the cover of 'Men of the Storm'. Jack studied at Leeds College of Art gaining his art teacher's diploma as well as his diploma in painting in 1953. He married at Leeds in 1953 Jean Cawood and they lived in Dublin 1953-1975 where he worked and exhibited regularly and on his return to England, lived in Suffolk with his wife and three children painting during the daytime but during the evening exchanged his brushes for a clarinet, and on joining his band sometimes became 'Phil Butler', who was well-known in jazz circles. His paintings were selected for the Royal Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy, Irish Exhibition of Living Art and Oireachtas exhibitions and elsewhere in Ireland also showing at the Belgrave Gallery in 1977. Jack Cudworth died on 31 July 2010.
