FERENS ART GALLERY
The Ferens Museum in Hull opened to the public in 1906, displaying materials related to slavery and social history. In 1917, Thomas Robinson Ferens (1847–1930), M.P. and local benefactor, again donated funds to build a new art gallery on the site of the former St John's Church and The Ferens Art Gallery opened in 1927 named after the local benefactor. Ferens Art Gallery combines internationally renowned permanent collections with a thriving programme of temporary exhibitions. The gallery's permanent collection traverses the medieval period to the present day with European Old Masters, Dutch and Flemish, portraiture, marine and topographical paintings and modern and contemporary British art, including video. Named artists include outstanding works by Frans Hals, Antonio Canaletto, Stanley Spencer, David Hockney and Helen Chadwick. In 1993 Ferens won the Museum of the Year Award for the Best Museum of Fine and Applied Art. Suffolk artists' works in the Ferens Art Gallery include John Ernest Foster and those that exhibited include Anthony Levett-Prinsep and Peter Wylie
