STOWMARKET ART CLUB
Stowmarket Art Club was founded in 1959 when Vera Mabel Wilhelmina Longe passion for art led her and nine other local artists to establish the Club, and more than half a century later the group is still going strong. The club’s first meeting took place at The Royal Oak public house (now The Oak) on 11 February 1960 when Vera Longe was appointed Secretary. The Art Club’s launch even attracted the interest of ITV and the BBC and Vera recounted how the TV people brought a glamorous model to the Royal Oak, who posed on the bar while the artists sketched. The club was reformed in 2015 and has grown over the years moving venues several times but now (2023) meets at Hillside Recreation Centre, Combs Ford, Stowmarket. The Club runs from September until May with meetings on Tuesday evenings 7-9pm and Thursday mornings 10am-1pm. The Club provides the opportunity for Artists of all abilities to meet up with others who share their enjoyment of painting and drawing. Membership ranges from novices to professional Artists. It has exhibited at the United Reformed Church, Ipswich Street, Stowmarket.
