Brian Lilley

Brian Cecil Lilley was born at Stowmarket, Suffolk in 1936, son of Cecil Albert Lilley (16 April 1907-5 July 1973), a butcher, and his wife Nellie née Good (12 October 1906-12 February 1968), who married at Tendring, Essex in 1932 and in 1939 were living at 67 Bury Road, Stowmarket. Brian was educated at Stowmarket Grammar School, where his interest in art was first encouraged. Brian worked mainly in watercolour but was just as skilful in pastels and oils and specialised in local scenes, especially Suffolk villages. A founder member of Stowmarket Art Club, holding the 'Portway Cup' for the best picture in the 1979 exhibition also exhibiting at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich an oil 'Framlingham Horse Fair'. In 1980 he exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 20 Finningham Road, Old Newton, Sudbury, Suffolk, two paintings 'Woodbridge Horse Fair' and 'Town Steps, Aldeburgh' and exhibited from Katoomba, Chapel Road, Stowmarket, Suffolk at the 'Visions of Sudbury' show at St Peter's church, Sudbury in 2013, a watercolour 'Village Times, Chelsworth'. Brian married in the Hartismere district of Suffolk in 1965, Georgina Debenham. Brian Cecil Lilley died at Stowmarket on 15 February 2020, leaving a widow and two daughters.
