HASTE, David
David Bryan Haste was born at Felixstowe, Suffolk in March 1938, son of Beauford Haste (10 June 1901-21 March 1980), co-proprietor of Haste's Garage at Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, who later took holy orders, and his wife Olwyn née Reynolds (18 August 1903-15 June 1991), who married at Marylebone, London in 1927. Beaufort was chairman of Felixstowe Urban District Council, and the family lived at 9 Beatrice Avenue, Felixstowe, where David was raised. Leaving home as a teenager, David pursued adventure, joining the RAF as an aircrew cadet but resigned after five months, becoming an architecture pupil before spending two years National Service with the Royal Norfolk Regiment in Germany. He studied art part-time and, whilst working on British Railways, took the Civil Service Examinations in 1959 and became a Waterguard Officer in HM Customs, serving at different ports/airports within the UK before patrolling the Irish border for some two years, where he associated with Irish artists. In 1964, he hung up his uniform and studied at the Ipswich School of Art 1964-1965, followed by the St Martin's School of Art 1965-1968 and the Royal College of Art 1968-1971. Haste became a tutor at Wimbledon School of Art and a visiting lecturer at several other art colleges and universities before becoming Head of the School of Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art, now the University of the Creative Arts, 1982-1997 and is the author of 'The Art Schools of Kent: A Complete History' (2014). During his lengthy career as an artist, Haste accrued a considerable amount of work and in 2010 presented a selection 'Modelled Narratives' for his solo exhibition with Curwen Gallery. He has also had solo exhibition at the London Astoria, Charing Cross Road; Thumb Gallery, London; Deben Gallery, Woodbridge; Architectural Association School; Gloria Gallery, Nicosia, Cyprus; The House of Demetra, Cyprus; Apocalypse Gallery, Nicosia; the Rectory Gallery, London and elsewhere.
