BRUCE, Susie

1954 - ?

Susan B. Bruce was born in Coventry in 1954. Susan trained, initially as a ceramist, but also in printmaking at Cheltenham and later at Lowestoft College of Art and has attended several printmaking workshops to learn the new printing techniques. She taught art in schools and colleges for many years and is a printmaker and a member of the Suffolk Craft Society both as a printmaker and as a ceramic artist, she is also a member of the Gainsborough's House Print Workshop in Sudbury and a professional member of the Craft Potters Association. Her current prints are collagraphs with collage, with the river Deben estuary near her home a major influence on her work. Susie's has a series of prints which are based on drawings of Levens Hall topiary garden in Cumbria with the almost geometric shapes inspired semi-abstract compositions, with layers of rich surface pattern. As a ceramicist Susie is fascinated by the way that clay changes as it is manipulated and makes use of the point at which clay slabs will collapse and bend if they are not left to firm up enough before assembling. Her hand-built pots are made from porcelain clay often including gold lustre applied as a third firing. A member of the Ipswich Art Society, she has exhibited widely including Lion House Gallery, Lavenham; Snape Maltings Galleries; Peter Pears Gallery Aldeburgh; Blackthorpe Barn, Rougham, Suffolk; Edmund Gallery, Bury St Edmund's and Ipswich Town Hall Gallery 2, Ipswich. A member of Suffolk Open Studios from 4 Pinewood, Woodbridge, Suffolk. Susie Bruce is the author of ‘The Art of Handbuilt Ceramics’ (2000).
