Annie Rice

As Annie Rice-James, she took up painting in a Leisure Class at the age of 38, and after a weekend course at Madingley College, Cambridge University in 1990, decided that art was to become her way of life. Annie studied Life Drawing at Norwich School of Art, City College Norwich, obtaining an A level with A* pass and at Lowestoft College of Art to degree with Merit pass and a City and Guilds of London Art School Teaching Adults Certificate. In 1999 she started her own Art School for mature persons at 'The Works', Beccles, Suffolk which, with 120 students attending two-hour classes each week and workshops at weekends, proved a successful venture but in November 2006, to enable her to concentrate on her own painting, the school was sold. Annie is a professional artist working in watercolour, inks, and mixed media but also a freelance tutor, tutoring at private workshops and art clubs and societies and tutors for a holiday company at locations in the UK and abroad. Her painting is inspired by bold shapes and colours, and the life and essence of the subject matter moving often into abstraction, working with flowing mediums, with collage and other media to create texture and random effects in her paintings. A former member of Suffolk Open Studios; of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists where she exhibited also showed at the Mall Galleries, London; Southwold Art Circle, National Horseracing Museum at Palace House Gallery, Newmarket and had solo exhibitions at Upstairs Gallery, Beccles and at Southwold; Aldeburgh; Ferini Art Gallery, Pakefield and the Courtyard Gallery. She had her studio at Wenhaston, Southwold, Suffolk.
